MEPs visit Georgia to assess human rights and express solidarity

A delegation from the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights travelled to Georgia from 26 to 28 May. The purpose of the visit was to show support for pro-EU civil society organisations, and to assess the human rights and fundamental freedoms situation in the country, not least in the light of its EU membership candidate status. The visit took place against the backdrop of an accelerating democratic and political crisis, unfolding since the October 2024 parliamentary elections, and the de facto freezing of the country’s EU accession process. Quote Following the visit, the Chair of Parliament’s delegation Nacho Sanchez Amor (S&D, ES) said: “We were deeply impressed by the Georgian people’s bravery in fighting appalling repression. We went to express our unwavering support for them and their wish to live in a prosperous and democratic country that fully respects the rule of law and human rights. The EU and its member states must take all necessary steps to help reverse the country’s authoritarian trajectory, including asset freezes and travel bans targeting those perpetrating violations.” Background MEPs travelled to Georgia with a clear message that the country belongs in the EU.
