Commission Decision regarding the follow-up to National Parliaments' Opinions - reply to RIKSDAG (SE) - COM(2024)800 final

EUROPEAN COMMISSION Dear President, Brussels, 27.5.2025 C(2025) 3556 final The Commission would like to thank the Swedish Riksdag for its Opinion on the Communication from the Commission on the 2024 Rule of Law Report – the rule of law situation in the European Union {COM (2024)800 final}. The Commission welcomes the importance that the Riksdag attaches to rule of law matters and to the Commission’s role in this process. The rule of law is an essential safeguard for the functioning of our democracies, the protection of individual rights and the prosperity of our societies and economies. The Political Guidelines for 2024-2029 of President von der Leyen underline that the EU’s democracy and economy rely on the rule of law. They demonstrate our determination to strengthen the rule of law further, notably by adding a single market dimension to the Rule of Law Report and by building a closer link between the recommendations in the Rule of Law Reports and financial support. Drawing on the experience gained over recent years and the lessons learned, the Commission will continue to take a proactive stance to safeguard and uphold the rule of law. The Commission would like to thank the Riksdag for the support expressed for the 2024 Rule of Law Report and for the decision to include for the first time certain enlargement countries in the report, to support their efforts to achieve irreversible progress on democracy and the Rule of Law.
