New rules on reliable and comparable statistics on EU population agreed

The new rules aim to ensure that data from EU-countries is comparable to help evidence-based policy-making. The update of the regulation integrates current statistics on demography, migration and censuses and asks member states to provide statistics on demography, housing, and families and households. Increased reliability of statistical data During the negotiations, MEPs made sure that the law includes a new provision to develop methodologies for data collection on “hard-to-reach” population groups, such as homeless people and persons with disabilities, to capture the best possible picture of the society and to prevent social and economic inequalities. To combat intersectional discrimination, data will now have to be disaggregated by gender, age and disability, and, where relevant, nationality, socio-economic status, and other parameters. To tackle the lack of common definition of “population base”, EU co-legislators agreed to introduce into the law a new term to define “population”, without any exemptions. Having an EU-wide population definition will improve the comparability of European population statistics, they stress.
