Definition: • Tradeable ‘units’ of biodiversity that have been conserved through protection and/or restoration activities, which are then sold to those who want to invest in biodiversity conservation. • A credit system verifies local outcomes of conservation. It needs to be embedded in a high integrity global system on rules of use founded on the mitigation hierarchy.
