Armed ethno-religious conflict in Manipur, India

Question for written answer E-000877/2024 to the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Rule 138 Bert-Jan Ruissen (ECR) Subject: Armed ethno-religious conflict in Manipur, India Since 3 May 2023, there has been an ongoing armed conflict in Manipur, in north-eastern India, between the predominantly Christian Kuki community and the majority Hindu Meitei community. Over 219 people have died so far and 60 000 have been displaced. Local reports liken the situation on the ground to a civil war. Multiple UN special rapporteurs have expressed grave concern over the Indian Government’s lack of an adequate response, and in July 2023, Parliament issued a resolution1 calling for urgent action by the European External Action Service (EEAS). Given that violence persists: 1. Has the EEAS urged India to allow independent investigations into the violence, and if not, why not? 2. Has the EEAS supported humanitarian relief for displaced persons and has it urged India to grant unhindered access to humanitarian support? 3. Will it publicly call on the Indian Government to take all necessary measures to end the violence, and if not, why not?
