Industrial Pollution Reform: Moving Together Towards a Clean Environment

With the assistance of the European Union, Save Dnipro NGO has implemented several initiatives to reduce and control industrial emissions. Dmytro from the city of Dnipro recalls: “We woke up to the fact that we had a gas chamber in our apartment. Since the evening, we left barely opened windows, and because of this, there was nothing to breathe. So we were forced by the whole family to go away because it was impossible to stay at home. We came back at five or six in the evening, but there was still a chemical smell in the apartment.”These are the consequences of proximity to industrial giants, which were built near residential quarters in the Soviet era. They poison the lives of residents of industrialized cities in a literal and figurative sense. For decades, hazardous emissions from businesses have caused numerous diseases and shortened life expectancy. And there are practically no effective mechanisms for protecting citizens' rights to a clean and safe environment. NGO Save Dnipro originated from protests against the uncontrolled emissions of one of the Dnipro polluting enterprises—Prydniprovska Thermal Power Plant (a coal-fired power plant).
