News Item 28 May 2025 Fundamental rights features during smart border systems training Asylum, migration and borders Borders and information systems On 27 May, FRA provided online training on fundamental rights when using biometrics at an event organised by Frontex. The event focused on vulnerabilities in automated border crossings at Lisbon airport. The training included practical testing sessions of the automatic border crossing gates and self-service systems. Such systems have been set up in preparation of the coming into operation of the Entry Exit System in 2025, as part of the digitalisation of the EU’s external borders. FRA highlighted the fundamental rights concerns in relation to data protection, child rights and access to remedies. On 21 and 23 May, FRA also provided online training on fundamental rights in the context of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). It was part ETIAS National Unit’ training organised by Frontex. The training looked at how to safeguard fundamental rights in ETIAS processes and in practical situations faced by staff processing applications at the national level. Representatives of EU Member States and Schengen associated countries attended the training sessions.
