European Commission -Speech [Check Against Delivery] Introductory remarks by Commissioner Hoekstra at the European Parliament's Committee on the Environment, Climate and Food Safety (ENVI) Strasbourg, 5 May 2025 Dear Chair, Honourable Members, It's great to be here today with all of you, and thank you very much for organising this Structured Dialogue with the ENVI Committee. Since the start of the mandate, I've been fortunate to be in touch with many of you one-on-one, but I'm delighted to be here for an in-depth exchange with all of you formally on EU climate policies. Dear Chair, Dear Members, I'll mention a few things that in my view are most likely to be top of mind, but I am sure we are going to discuss much more in the course of this debate. We truly see unprecedented change to global geopolitics. We have entered a geopolitical winter, full frontal. That affects the domain of trade; the domain of safety and security; the domain of economics at large, but certainly also unfortunately the domain of international climate diplomacy. The EU is facing many challenges at home, but certainly also abroad. We are facing at home the conumdrum of needing to make sure that we continue with our climate policies, but making sure that our businesses become ever more competitive and that we actually decrease our dependencies on regimes not to be trusted from outside.
