Chemnitz is Capital of Culture 2025 – Bundesbank events

Chemnitz is the European Capital of Culture 2025. To mark the occasion, the Regional Office in Saxony and Thuringia is organising a range of events at the Bundesbank’s Chemnitz branch. In addition to a coin exhibition and an art exhibition, there will be a panel discussion with Bundesbank Executive Board member Burkard Balz. Coin exhibition From 30 April to 27 June 2025, items from the Bundesbank’s numismatic collection will be on display at the Chemnitz branch in an exhibition on the history of money. The exhibition will focus on coins and banknotes from Chemnitz and the surrounding area. The Ore Mountains had abundant silver deposits that were mined and made into coins in Saxon mints. Starting in the early modern period, a wealth of thaler, groschen and pfennigs were coined here. Artworks from the Bundesbank’s collection From 3 September to 7 November 2025, works from the Bundesbank’s art collection will be on display in an exhibition entitled “Natur und Struktur” (“Nature and structure”). It will include works by Isa Genzken, Eberhard Havekost and Erich Heckel. The selection of modern and contemporary artworks will have an architectural theme and shine the spotlight on the outstanding branch building in Chemnitz, which was designed by Spanish architect Josep Lluís Mateo and opened in 2004.
