(English version) Question for written answer E-002218/24 to the Commission João Oliveira (The Left) (22 October 2024) Subject: Support for the wine sector in Portugal The wine sector in Portugal is grappling with serious challenges. Low amounts paid for produce contrast with the 2023 trade deficit in raw material: around 4 000 tonnes of fresh grapes. The situation is similar in the European wine grape market. This utterly absurd state of affairs leaves small and medium-sized Portuguese wine grape producers unable to clear stocks of their produce despite the demand for raw material. The Portuguese market also receives grapes from other countries. This situation is connected to decisions made in the common market organisation (CMO) for wine, the liberalisation of production in the EU and the common agricultural policy, specifically the liberalisation of planting rights. In view of the above: What support is available for grape growers in Portugal, and small and medium-sized producers in particular? Will the Commission put forward a proposal to review the CMO in response to these challenges?
